The plane was diverted to JFK Airport in New York around 10:30 pm. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the emergency landing was due to the bathroom overflow, while American Airlines attributed it to a maintenance issue.

The Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam had to divert to JFK Airport as a result. Medics assisted nearly 25 passengers and crew members upon landing, with 24 cases requiring aid. Despite the inconvenience, customers were provided with hotel accommodations and rebooked on a new flight.
Both American Airlines and Delta Airlines have apologized for the disruptions faced by their passengers and have taken steps to ensure their comfort and safety.
