Managed service providers (MSPs) are facing a shift in customer expectations, according to a new study by CyberSmart. The research, based on a survey of 250 senior leaders at UK-based MSPs, reveals that 65 percent of MSP customers now expect their provider to manage either their cybersecurity infrastructure or both their cybersecurity and IT infrastructure.
This change in expectations can be attributed to the lack of specific cybersecurity roles within the customers’ organizations. The study shows that only 37 percent of respondents indicate that 20 percent or less of their customers have an in-house cybersecurity role. As a result, MSPs are now being called upon to take on a more proactive role in managing security on behalf of their clients.
Jamie Akhtar, co-founder and CEO at CyberSmart, emphasizes the importance of this shift in customer needs. He notes that MSPs play a crucial role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and are essential to the functioning of our economy’s IT infrastructure. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is only natural that MSPs would expand their service offerings to include security solutions.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge that MSPs themselves are not immune to cyber threats. Akhtar stresses the importance of empowering MSPs to deliver security services with confidence. This includes providing them with the necessary resources and support to enhance their security capabilities.
In response to these changing demands, many MSPs are ramping up their investments in security. The study found that 33 percent of MSPs have increased their budget for security capabilities, while 28 percent have allocated more funds for regulatory compliance. Additionally, 28 percent of MSPs have made specialist cybersecurity hires, and 14 percent have brought in regulatory experts to strengthen their teams.
The findings from the study underscore the evolving nature of the MSP market and the increasing importance of cybersecurity in the services they provide. As IT and cybersecurity threats continue to grow in complexity, MSPs will need to adapt and enhance their security offerings to meet the changing needs of their customers.
