New research has shown that a significant number of children in Manchester have never had an eye test, despite the importance of regular eye examinations for their overall development. The survey revealed that over a quarter of parents reported that their child had experienced issues at school that could be related to vision problems. Common complaints included difficulty seeing the whiteboard, having to move to the front of the classroom to see, and experiencing headaches.

Specsavers, a leading optician, has launched an innovative solution to address this issue by introducing the first-ever ‘eye screen’ van. This van, equipped with visual screeners and ice lollies, aims to make children’s eye health a priority for parents. The van has made appearances in London’s South Bank and The Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh, providing on-the-spot screenings to identify potential eyesight issues in children.

Despite the availability of NHS-funded eye tests and free glasses for children under 16, many parents are unaware of this benefit. The research also found that eye tests are often neglected in the back-to-school checklist, with only a fifth of parents prioritizing them alongside dental checks.

Specsavers’ clinical services director, Giles Edmonds, emphasized the importance of regular eye examinations for children, even if they do not display any visible signs of vision problems. He highlighted that poor eyesight can lead to learning and behavioral difficulties, underscoring the significance of early detection and treatment of conditions like amblyopia.

To address children’s fears and concerns about eye tests, Specsavers is introducing ‘Optomonsters’ to make visits to the opticians more enjoyable. These friendly characters will be featured in stores nationwide, aiming to create a more welcoming and engaging environment for young patients.

Overall, the research underscores the need for increased awareness and importance of children’s eye health. Parents are encouraged to prioritize regular eye tests for their children to ensure optimal vision and overall well-being.
