Three councillors from the Hangleton and Knoll ward, Faiza Baghoth, Amanda Grimshaw, and John Hewitt, have expressed their opposition to the plans to build 101 homes in Benfield Valley. The consortium behind the project, Benfield Property Ltd and Benfield Investments Ltd, have submitted their plans to the Brighton and Hove City Council.

The councillors have stated that they do not support the development and will be submitting formal objections to the planning application BH2024/01720. They are also encouraging other residents to do the same. While they acknowledge the need for housing, they believe that jeopardizing the Valley’s environment is not the right approach.

Benfield Property and Benfield Investments have stated that if their plans are approved, 90% of Benfield Valley will remain undeveloped. Additionally, 40% of the proposed homes will be classified as “affordable” in line with council policy. The consortium owns land on a long lease from the council and plans to release the southern part of the site as community parkland.

In response to feedback from local wildlife groups, the housing planned for north of the road will be built slightly further east to double the size of the proposed wildlife corridor. The developer believes that these changes strike a balance between protecting the environment and providing housing.

Benfield Barn is set to be restored and transformed into a community hub with space for various activities. The consortium aims to create a space for community events, wildlife interpretation, exhibitions, educational use, and a community café.

Labour MP for Hove, Peter Kyle, has also voiced his support for keeping Benfield Valley green. He highlighted the importance of balancing development with preserving green spaces for the community to enjoy. Mr. Kyle emphasized the need for sustainable development that maintains the local character.

To view the plans for the site north of Hangleton Lane or to provide feedback, residents can visit the Brighton and Hove City Council website and search for planning application BH2024/01720.
