Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve Development Authority Board recently announced the launch of the Reserve’s Integrated Development Management Plan (IDMP). This plan is a significant step towards managing and developing the 24,500 square kilometer Reserve, which consists of 15 different ecosystems, from mountain ridges to coral reefs.
The IDMP covers various aspects such as environmental conservation, economic development, social impact, tourism, and cultural preservation. It aims to restore and conserve wildlife by following global standards, including reintroducing extinct species like the Arabian oryx, Arabian leopard, and cheetah. Additionally, the plan focuses on developing the ecotourism ecosystem within the Reserve.
The Reserve, which is home to a diverse range of ecosystems and wildlife, is also aiming to become a leading heritage tourism destination known for its environmental conservation efforts. The Crown Prince, who is also the Chairman of the Council of Royal Reserves, is committed to working towards sustainability and environmental conservation goals set by the Saudi Green Initiative.
The Reserve Development Authority has been working closely with local and international experts to conduct research and development efforts to enhance conservation practices. The Authority has also established partnerships with various entities to promote knowledge exchange and implement best environmental practices. By 2025, the Reserve plans to create an environmental corridor spanning 70,000 km² to allow animals to roam freely, contributing to regional environmental restoration efforts and boosting ecotourism experiences.
The Royal Reserve is one of eight reserves overseen by the Royal Reserves Council and aims to protect wildlife, promote afforestation, enhance ecotourism, and create job opportunities for local communities. The Reserve’s strategic location connecting major projects like NEOM, AMAALA, Red Sea Global, and AlUla further highlights its importance in regional environmental conservation efforts.
The Reserve’s commitment to conservation, wildlife reintroduction, and sustainable development aligns with global environmental goals. The efforts of the Reserve Development Authority, under the leadership of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, are paving the way for a more sustainable future for the Kingdom while preserving its rich biodiversity and ecosystems.
