With summer in full swing and more people at home, parents are worried about rising utility bills. However, teenagers are stepping up to make a difference. According to Smart Energy GB, 82% of teenagers believe in being environmentally friendly and are actively trying to reduce energy waste at home.

Many teens are taking action by having shorter showers and using the washing machine at a lower temperature. They are also influencing their parents to adopt better energy habits. Teens are reminding their parents to turn off lights, air dry clothes, unplug devices, and watch their smart meter displays.

This ‘pester power’ from teenagers is making parents more aware of their energy consumption. In fact, some parents have installed smart meters after being influenced by their kids. Smart meter owners have reported saving an average of £140 in the last year.

Smart Energy GB, along with Energy Advice Helpline and actor Will Mellor, are working to raise awareness about energy-saving options and the benefits of smart meters. Will Mellor shared, “By working with Smart Energy GB, we wanted to better understand where we could make small changes to our routine to help reduce our energy usage.”

Victoria Bacon, Director at Smart Energy GB, noted that younger generations are eager to embrace energy-efficient habits, which is a positive sign for reducing household energy waste. Chris Reynolds, Marketing Director at Energy Advice Helpline, added that households are increasingly focusing on energy efficiency, with the younger generation leading the way in influencing their older family members to make changes.
