Major Disruption: Greater Manchester Station Closure for 7 Weekends

Salford Crescent train station is going to shut down for ‘several weekends’ next year to construct a new third platform. Passengers have been informed to anticipate the station being closed during seven weekends between March and September 2025, with the construction set to be completed in early 2026. Network Rail is currently collaborating with Northern and Transport for Greater Manchester to ensure passengers are aware of their travel alternatives.

The weekends when the station will be closed are:
– March 1 and 2
– March 8 and 9
– March 15 and 16
– March 22 and 23
– April 12 and 13
– May 17 and 18
– September 13 and 14

The development of a third platform at the station, costing £21 million, was proposed in July to alleviate congestion at one of Greater Manchester’s busiest transportation hubs. In 2022/23, the station recorded nearly 1.2 million entries and exits and is situated on the bustling Manchester to Preston line, with services connecting from various locations in the North West to Manchester and Manchester Airport.

Significant changes are on the horizon for Salford Crescent station. Railway authorities state that an additional platform will enhance passenger flow and decrease train delays by providing more flexibility for trains passing through central Manchester and other parts of the country. In conjunction with the project, Transport for Greater Manchester and Network Rail are investing £10 million in Salford Central station. The initiative includes new customer information points and wayfinding to integrate with the Bee Network.

Salford Central station will be shut down from Monday, February 10 to Monday, April 21, 2025, although trains will continue to pass through the station. Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett expressed that the improvements will benefit all station users. He stated, “This investment in our local transport network is much needed and is the result of close collaboration with city partners. Salford City Council is dedicated to creating a fairer, greener, healthier, and more inclusive city for all, with access to quality public transport being a crucial element of our vision for the city. Enhancing these two key stations has been a longstanding necessity, so it is gratifying to see this planned work now confirmed.”

The station will receive upgraded facilities. Ben Porter from Network Rail explained, “The new third platform at Salford Crescent station will enable signal operators to better manage train movements in the area. As a result of this project, passengers will experience smoother, more dependable journeys through Salford and across the North West. We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause some passengers and appreciate your patience during the upgrade.” Simon Elliott, Head of Rail at TfGM, added, “We applaud the substantial improvement and investment anticipated with Network Rail’s work at Salford Crescent and TfGM’s at Salford Central. This investment in Salford will not only enhance the passenger experience but also contribute to a more reliable and connected network for everyone. Together, these upgrades are a crucial component of our broader goal to enhance our integrated and sustainable transport system for the future.”
