House of the Dragon recently introduced a new character in its season two finale, Admiral Lohar. In the episode, Tyland Lannister, King Aegon II’s Master of Ships, is sent to Essos to recruit Triarchy pirates to help break down the Velaryon blockade that is starving King’s Landing. The Triarchy leaders make it clear to Tyland that he must win the respect of their admiral, a woman named Sharako Lohar.
Admiral Lohar challenges Tyland to a wrestling match in the mud to prove his worth. Despite Lohar’s clear strength, Tyland manages to win her respect after a fierce battle. Later, Lohar shocks Tyland by asking him to father her children, clarifying that she wants him to have relations with her multiple wives.
In the show, members of the Triarchy refer to Lohar using he/him pronouns, even though she personally identifies as a woman. Showrunner Ryan Condal explains that this deliberate blurring of boundaries reflects Lohar’s position as a fleet commander in a highly patriarchal society. In George RR Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Lohar is also referred to using he/him pronouns.
Admiral Lohar played a pivotal role in The Battle of the Gullet, which was one of the bloodiest battles in Westerosi history. The battle resulted in the death of Prince Jacaerys Velaryon and the capture of Prince Viserys Targaryen. Lohar’s losses in the battle eventually led to The Daughters’ War between the Triarchy.
Abigail Thorn, the actor who portrays Admiral Lohar, is also known for her role in the Star Wars spinoff The Acolyte. She is the franchise’s first openly transgender actor. Thorn is also a popular figure on YouTube, where she runs the channel Philosophy Tube, providing free philosophy lessons to her 1.5 million subscribers.
House of the Dragon season two is now available for streaming on Max. The addition of Admiral Lohar adds a new dimension to the show’s complex storyline, and fans are eager to see how her character will continue to develop in future episodes.
