The tragic death of 4-year-old Madison Grace Davis in Birmingham has been ruled a homicide, two years after her father, Demarkus Etwan Moss, was fatally shot. Madison passed away on June 25, 2024, after sustaining critical injuries in the shooting that took place on Sept. 2, 2022, on Arkadelphia Road. It is unclear whether Madison was shot or injured in the subsequent crash, but her family revealed that she suffered a traumatic brain injury in the incident.

Following the shooting, Madison was unable to walk or talk again. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office recently determined that her death was a homicide. The shooting occurred near Birmingham-Southern College, where Moss, Madison’s father, was shot multiple times while driving. Despite his injuries, Moss managed to drive a short distance before colliding with another vehicle. He was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.

Madison, along with her infant brother, who survived the crash, was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. Although her brother sustained minor injuries, Madison’s condition worsened, leading to her readmission to the hospital. Moss also left behind two other children. The police believe that Moss was specifically targeted in the deadly shooting, but no arrests have been made in connection with the case.

Mayor Randall Woodfin urged the public to come forward with any information regarding the incident. A GoFundMe page was created to support Madison’s family during this difficult time, describing her as a strong and courageous girl. Her passing marks the 95th homicide in Birmingham this year, out of which eight have been deemed justifiable. Throughout Jefferson County, there have been a total of 120 homicides in 2024, including those in Birmingham.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. The community is encouraged to provide any leads that may help bring justice for Madison and her family during this tragic time.
