Returning to my hometown at 34 years old made me feel out of touch with the latest fashion trends. A recent night out with a friend highlighted just how different things are now. We were dressed up in elegant heels, but everyone else at the bar was wearing flats. This shift in fashion was shocking to me, as I had always associated heels with feeling womanly, glamorous, and confident.

In the past, heels were a staple in everyone’s wardrobe, from iconic supermodels to fictional characters like Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City.” The sight of girls carrying their heels home after a night out was a common one, showcasing the love-hate relationship with these footwear. Despite the pain they might cause, the confidence and poise that comes with wearing heels make it all worth it.

The pandemic changed the way we dress, with comfort becoming a top priority. This shift in fashion has led to a decline in the popularity of high heels, with more people opting for comfortable options like ballet pumps and trainers. While Gen Z might prefer flats for their practicality and comfort, there is still a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the elegance and sophistication that comes with wearing heels.

Despite the trend towards more casual and comfortable footwear, there will always be a place for heels in the fashion world. Whether it’s for a night out, a special occasion, or just to feel a little extra glamorous, heels will continue to hold a special place in many people’s hearts. So, while the fashion landscape may be changing, there will always be those who choose to keep their standards high and their heels even higher.
