Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) in the Philippines has recently put into operation three new quay cranes, marking a significant milestone in the port’s efforts to enhance efficiency and meet the growing demands of container shipping. This development is part of MICT’s ongoing commitment to providing top-notch port services and streamlining operations for a better customer experience.
The addition of these new cranes, as highlighted by Christian Lozano, MICT’s chief operating officer, is a key part of the terminal’s expansion and modernization plans. With a total of 18 quay cranes, MICT boasts the largest fleet of such equipment in the Philippines. The new cranes will play a crucial role in improving cargo handling capabilities, leading to quicker turnaround times for vessels and overall smoother operations.
Moreover, the increased operational efficiencies brought about by the new cranes will allow MICT to better manage peak periods and handle high cargo volumes effectively. This will result in more predictable operations for all stakeholders involved, including shippers and consignees who can expect more reliable and timely services from the terminal.
In addition to the acquisition of new equipment, MICT has also begun Phase 2 of its Berth 8 expansion project. This phase involves the construction of a 300-meter wharf and a 10-hectare container yard, which will significantly boost the terminal’s capacity by an additional 200,000 TEUs, bringing the total capacity to 3.5 million TEUs. Berth 8 will be equipped with three quay cranes specifically designed to handle foreign ultra-large container vessels with capacities of up to 18,000 TEUs. These new cranes are set to be operational by 2027, further enhancing MICT’s capabilities to cater to larger vessels and increased cargo volumes.
In a similar vein, ICTSI Manila has recently welcomed four new yard cranes to further bolster its operational capacity and efficiency. This investment in new equipment underscores the commitment of both MICT and ICTSI to staying at the forefront of the industry and continually improving their services to meet the evolving needs of global trade.
Overall, the completion of the new quay cranes at MICT and the ongoing expansion projects highlight the terminal’s dedication to providing world-class port services and ensuring a seamless experience for all parties involved in the shipping process. With these enhancements, MICT is well-positioned to handle the challenges of modern container shipping and remain a key player in the region’s maritime trade landscape.
