what-benefit-claimants-should-do-f-they-go-to-hospital-dwp-update

Millions of benefit claimants could face reduced payments if they fail to inform the government of their hospital stays this winter. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is working on a new digital platform to simplify the reporting process for those receiving disability benefits, low-income benefits, and the State Pension. However, this new system won’t be ready for at least another year and won’t include Universal Credit claimants, who currently use an online journal to communicate with the DWP.

Minister for Social Security and Disabilities, Sir Stephen Timms, confirmed the creation of a digital portal to report changes to the DWP in one place, but this won’t include Universal Credit customers. He clarified that for Disability Benefits, customers can notify the DWP of a hospital admission via phone or in writing. Universal Credit claimants can report a hospital stay through a phone call, digitally via their Universal Credit account, or through a third party with consent. PIP payments may pause during hospital stays and resume upon discharge to avoid duplication of funds.

What You Need to Know

If you’re claiming benefits and go to the hospital for one night or longer, to a care home, or miss a Jobcentre Plus appointment due to medical reasons, you must notify the DWP as soon as possible. If you’re unable to contact the office yourself, a friend or relative can call on your behalf. Provide your full name, date of birth, National Insurance number, and partner’s details when reporting a hospital stay.

Reporting Your Hospital Stay

When reporting your hospital stay, include the dates of admission and discharge, hospital name, ward details, any transfers between hospitals, and where you were discharged. The reporting process varies based on the benefits you receive, such as Universal Credit, Pension-age benefits, Disability benefits, Low or no income benefits, Child Benefit, or other specific benefits. Contact the relevant helpline or service to report your hospital stay promptly.

Take Action Now

It’s crucial for benefit claimants to be proactive in reporting hospital stays to the DWP to avoid payment disruptions. By following the guidelines provided by the DWP and using the appropriate channels to report changes, individuals can ensure their benefits remain unaffected during medical treatment. Stay informed about the reporting process for your specific benefits and act promptly to prevent any issues with your payments.

This information serves as a reminder of the importance of timely communication with the DWP to maintain benefit payments during hospital stays. By following the outlined steps and reaching out to the relevant authorities promptly, claimants can navigate this process smoothly and ensure their financial support remains uninterrupted. Remember, staying informed and taking action promptly can make a significant difference in safeguarding your benefits during challenging times.
