This morning, two major cross-Pennine routes, Woodhead Pass and Snake Pass between Manchester and Sheffield, remain closed due to heavy snowfall. Around 20cm of snow fell on higher ground overnight, causing temperatures to drop to 0C. Despite the closures, traffic on the region’s motorway network is running smoothly following the overnight freeze. The Metrolink is also operating without any reported issues.

Earlier, National Highways issued an amber ‘severe weather alert’ for snow across Greater Manchester and the North West, affecting roads such as the M62 between Milnrow and Huddersfield and the M56 near Manchester Airport. Drivers were warned of a ‘significant risk to vehicles’ and possible delays. However, as of now, there are no reported problems on either motorway, and traffic cameras show clear roads in the areas covered by the alert.

Manchester Airport is operating as usual this morning despite a light snowfall overnight. Airport officials advise passengers to allocate extra time for their journey to the airport. It is important to stay updated on the latest weather conditions and road closures in order to plan your travels accordingly. Stay safe and drive carefully if you need to venture out in these wintry conditions.
