The Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2024 is approaching, but pre-event flights have been suspended due to unsafe flying conditions caused by high winds. The community ascent scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled, with balloons typically ascending to heights of 2,000 ft (609m). This cancellation was part of the new “Fiesta Week” initiative, where hot air balloons visit various local communities.

Unfortunately, rain is forecasted for the upcoming days, making it unlikely for any more flights to take place before the main three-day event kicks off. Despite these setbacks, the main event is still expected to proceed as planned, with mass ascents scheduled at Ashton Court Estate at 06:00 BST and 18:30 each day.

Organizers took to social media to inform the public about the flight cancellations, emphasizing the importance of safety when considering weather conditions. Wind speeds play a crucial role in determining whether it is safe to launch the balloons, with high winds at higher altitudes posing a significant risk.

Earlier in the week, Monday’s flight was called off due to unfavorable weather conditions, including wind speeds of around 30mph. However, on Tuesday, with clearer skies and calmer winds, a dozen hot air balloons were able to take flight, marking the first and only flight of Fiesta Week.

Looking ahead, the forecast shows rain in the coming days, leading organizers to anticipate no further flights before the main event. While there is optimism about improving weather conditions as the week progresses, weather forecaster Ian Fergusson warns that the decision to launch the balloons will depend on the conditions each morning.

The main fiesta has been shortened from four days to three due to increasing costs, but the excitement and anticipation surrounding the event remain high.
