Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are still waiting for a decision from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) regarding the Manchester Airport arrest video that went viral. The Reform Party is threatening to pursue private prosecutions against the suspects if they are not charged. The video showed an officer apparently kicking and stamping on the head of Fahir Amaaz, 19, as he and his brother Muhammed Amaad, 25, were being restrained by officers. Additional footage obtained later showed the events leading up to the incident, including when two female police officers were knocked to the ground before Mr. Amaaz was subdued with a Taser. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident, and GMP is looking into the actions of those involved while the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the officers’ actions.
Reform UK recently sent a letter to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, signed by leader Nigel Farage and Deputy Leader Richard Tice, expressing concerns about the delay in charging the suspects. They suggested that the CPS might be waiting for the IOPC to find fault with the police officers as a reason not to press charges against the assailants. The Reform Party stated that they would pursue private criminal prosecutions against the suspects if the CPS does not act, and they are prepared to crowdfund the prosecution if needed. In response, GMP emphasized that they have provided evidence to the CPS and are awaiting a decision, refraining from releasing further details to avoid prejudicing the case. They continue to support the officers involved and are focused on ensuring justice is served.
The IOPC has stated that two officers are under criminal investigation for assault in connection with the incident. They clarified that serving notices does not automatically lead to criminal charges or misconduct proceedings; a decision will be made at the conclusion of their investigation on whether to refer the matter to the CPS for charging decisions and potential disciplinary actions.
The Reform Party’s actions highlight the growing concerns regarding accountability and transparency within law enforcement. The threat of private prosecutions underscores the public’s demand for justice and fairness in addressing alleged misconduct. As the investigations by GMP and the IOPC continue, the pressure on the CPS to make a charging decision intensifies. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have implications for the relationship between law enforcement, the justice system, and the public’s trust in these institutions. It is essential for all parties involved to prioritize truth, fairness, and accountability to uphold the integrity of the legal system.
